  1. The year 1950 was a breakthrough year
  2. for African-American basketball players.
  3. Shortly before Sweetwater Clifton
  4. became the first African-American to
  5. sign a contract with an NBA team, two
  6. other black players were selected in the
  7. 1950 NBA draft. Chuck Cooper of
  8. Duquesne University was selected by
  9. the Boston Celtics with their second
  10. pick. Earl Lloyd was then selected by
  11. the Washington (D. C.) Capitols.
  12. Because  Washington played its first
  13. game before either ChuckΓÇÖs Celtics or
  14. NatΓÇÖs Knicks, Earl made history, on
  15. October 31, 1950, as the first African-
  16. American to play in an NBA game.
